(and how I failed with this with a former business…)

Let me ask: Before you defined your ideal client and your signature offer, did you talk to them? Or did you run with an assumption and went all in?

Tag along to see how easy it is to get it wrong (even with experts help) and what you absolutely need to check before picking a niche…

I’m gaping at my male BFF.

Did he really just say that?

I ask if he’s for real and he repeats:

“I’d rather live 7 years less than not have fun living!”

Ok, ok…

I suppose I’d make this decision too under certain circumstances – but these are not the circumstances I’m talking about.

We talked about making a few live style changes like eating fewer animal products, going fully organic, dropping a few other things along the way…

(seems this is how he imagined this life to be with the suggested changes…)

Heck, he just lost his mum to cancer!!

Rewind a year or so:

I’d just lost my dad to cancer.

And this was terrible as I’m such a daddy’s girl.

It felt like I lost my whole family – being left alone in this world.

But apart from my loss I was also in fear.

Would I die this terrible death too?

What could I do to stay healthy?

Everything that I had researched for my dad as additional therapy showed that it was also helpful in preventing this dread disease…

So, I changed my life style.

And then an idea formed:

I wanted to help people in my situation to feel less stressed about what might come.

Wrote a book about things I learned you can do (and being a bit nerdy I did massive research for it).

Started a blog.

Created two different courses.

Posted religiously on social media.

Partook in blog parades.

And sold… maybe 100 books in the first year (if at all).

No private clients to talk about that wanted to work on THIS topic.

No one for my courses.

I was wondering if this lack of success was due to mistakes in workmanship.

I talked to a business coach who looked over my stuff – apparently nothing was really “wrong wrong”.

And then I met my BFF and he said these famous words.

It clicked: I had assumed – out of my own fear – that this was a problem the people I want to work with also wanted to solve.

The 3 Must-Ask-Questions You Need To Answer For Finding Your Profitable Coaching NicheAnd I was wrong!

I had this fear – some others might – but many don’t!

And talking to people in my mastermind, in business courses did not help me.

I got told from different coaches multiple times that this was an awesome niche, especially with my origin story (a.k.a. why am I doing what I am doing).

And that brings me to you and other fellow entrepreneurs (because this is how we have to see ourselves also when following our heart and passion as a coach).

Most likely you’re reading this because you want to work on niching your business. You might have downloaded my checklist on how to define a valid and profitable niche that is aligned with you.

I hope you got some good insights and it served you well.

If you did not use it yet, I encourage you to go ahead with it.

But if I had to reduce it to the three most important cross-checks you must make, it’d be:

  • Solve a burning pain (not the one in your head, but one, that your ideal client told you about)
  • Is your target group able to pay?
  • Are they willing to pay?

I know that many times you will hear “just follow your heart and passion and it will turn out”, but in my experience for myself and my clients it takes a whole lot more than just belief.

Let me know how your cross-check turns out!

Keep moving

P.S. I dropped the cancer project more than 3 years ago. Still, I have a dribble of book sales coming in and get very positive feedback from my readers – only it turns out that this is a very different sort of people who buy. They are hardly active on social media and would never buy an online course (pre COVID). Plus, for most I doubt that they have a lot of disposable income…

To sum it up: I did not do my due diligence before jumping head over heels into this niche…

P.P.S. Did not get my niching checklist yet? Well, good luck for you it is still on special…
